My chicks arrived yesterday after a quick (less than 24 hours) journey. All looked bright and energetic and ate and drank well. I think some of them were trying to murder the water nipples lol. Overnight one died, looked like she went to sleep under the heat plate and never woke up. No obvious trauma or symptoms of any kind, and she wasn't squished or trapped. One other is sluggish this morning. They have not encountered the ground since I've had them, and I have no other birds and haven't handled any so I can't imagine I contaminated anything. The brooder is in my garage which is critter-proof. Poops look normal, no obvious anything except lethargy. I got a little NutriDrench into her. I have Corid; should I use it? Anything else I can do? Thanks!

Three out of the six chicks I got recently were in this condition after I brought them home from the feed store, and they all had just a one-day transit from the hatchery.

Warm sugar water given a couple drops at a time every hour or so until you see the chick's been revived is really the best thing to do for chicks suffering transit stress, and it certainly can kill.

Corid won't fix failure to thrive and it's too soon for coccidiosis to be an issue. (not before day 6)

Even perfect looking home hatched chicks fail sometimes... we can't see what's going on inside... and once their yolk has been fully utilized it's time for their own digestion to start working.

Crushing the feed a little extra can help. Or wetting and make a mash.

For the sluggish one... I would drip the nutri drench water on the beak just below the nostrils allowing it roll around into the mouth and usually gobbled/swallowed... every 30-60 minutes until I saw improvement... double checking for pasty butt.

Hang in there! :fl

Thanks!! I had to go to work and when I got back that chick is back to normal. I'm not actually 100% certain which one it is lol. Now I'm hoping to do the same for a light Brahma who's decided to be pitiful.
