has anyone gotten a single combed slw from mpc before? I have a roo that was bred to a glw hen and the chick is single combed so will be getting culled i have a feeling their slw are not pure they are mixed im not happy

Hate to say it, but if your order from ANY hatchery you may get a single comb Wyandotte. I actually thought my straight combed lady was the prettiest of the bunch!

Anyways frustrated at the incorrect comb when having comb variety was the only reason I got Wyandotte... I learned that MANY breeders will keep straight combs in their flocks on purpose! This is probably more likely the cause if I had to guess and is a VERY common complaint about hatchery/feed store chicks.

It is said that by breeding ALL rose combs you will breed OUT your fertility. Or in other words not be able to hatch chicks indefinitely. Remember Wyandotte had many breeds brought together back in the beginning including some straight combs. I am not familiar enough with their history to go any deeper but sometimes old genes are hiding in there even if they hadn't shown up for many generations.

If it matters to you I would say find a reputable breeder and ask them some hard questions!

The genetic code for combs is two 'r's and two 'p's. Rose combs can be RRpp or Rrpp. The latter will result in a few single combed chicks when bred to another Rrpp bird. They look identical to the naked eye.

Like eggsighted said, it's widely noted that RRpp birds have poor fertility. The occasional straight comb doesn't mean the bird is not pure.

Rose combed birds will occasionally throw single combed offspring.
