That's a cockerel.

Is it the coloring of feathers to say cockerel?

This one is, to me, the most revealing image. The body feathers are black. Females normally show at least shafting which later turns to lacing. And the comb color is pretty darned bright. He also has the black chest tipped in white which seems a common feature of juvenile cockerels.

This picture shows the chest. Also, see how you can already tell he has red ears? That's a pretty strong sign.

Update, 9 weeks old. not much change in crown or vent yet. Still to young? Wait? Local hatchery bad quality? feathers around neck actually round tip, Checked feathers base of tale they are also round so far. Maybe to early for this.l

I looked back at last years batch, these were blue laced, and black laced, rooster in the center with the pullet right below him in the picture. I think yours is a pullet, based on them, but I could be wrong.

I can't believe how mellow this chick is. Had a hard time posting pictures. I had taken a picture of wing span couldn't find it but my hen was very up set with me and actually pecked at me for upsetting the young one. So I am happy she actually likes the new comer so I am thinking she already knows it is a female, Do chickens know before we know?

What age are they in the picture, the size of comb is very apparent to mine.
