I would hold a little back of the shoulder enough to not hit the blade, but you put a pass through on the ribcage it will die fairly quick. I have shot bull elk through the lungs with archery gear and they never knew anything happened other than "twang".

The .17 is too light - you can only wound the animal - what you need is a .243 is something close to that -

He's killing dogs, not deer.

The .17 will do the job and not overpenetrate as a 243 would do

Head shots are what I'd be taking

Head shots aren't ever a great idea unless you're very close and the target is stationary, which is seldom the case when shooting stray dogs

The heart / lung area is always a better choice

I am going with bear foot on this one

the .17hmr is a zippy little round. what it lacks it size it has in speed...those little ballistic tips they have really do the job and will open up and give you a good wound channel.

my father taught us to shoot for the head...deer included...which I have done...I am not teaching my boys to do this. Just being off a couple of inches which can happen if you misread wind or distance or breath wrong...it is a nasty wound and not what i want. Slip it in behind the leg...bounce it around in the chest and you get a dead dog

Avoid head shots on dogs. They have varied jawbone structure and skull thickness per breed that makes it an uncertain shot. Behind the shoulder offers the largest area to hit, the greatest margin of error, and usually the most humane kill. If snaring is legal, then build a small pen to put scraps of meat and table fare into, with a conveniently placed hole under the fence. After letting them visit a few times, hang a snare in the hole. If you have a large enough area, and the material to do so, build it big enough to have several holes with snares. Its very effective! And the 17 will do just fine with a well placed shot.
