Someone I visited today has a free-range flock of about 300 birds. It operation was described as organic where birds subsist off a combination of vegetable refuse and organic feed. The birds, in my opinion, did not look good. It was a very cold morning and all birds appeared covered in snaught. Many where standing less than alert and appeared more cold stress than mine that sleep under stars. We went to see roosting location and cause of problem became immediately evident. Relative to the number birds, the ventilation was inadequate. Condensate was on the plastic tarps and floor next to walls around the interior perimeter of the building. I suggested opening building up at night but it is likely losses will be incurred before changes are adopted. Building was closed up to keep them in lay. This may be a situation where supplemental heating in order or some sort of heat exchange system is needed.
