small eggs

I have some young chickens, about 5 months old, they started to lay but there eggs are very small. How will it take for the egg to get larger.

What type of chickens are they? Small eggs could be normal depending upon the breed.

The chickens are big birds but I'm not sure what breed as they were given to me. They belonged to my neighbor and she bought them early this year at the local feed store. 3 are white with black tips and feathers on their feet. The others are black with golden black on their necks. I would ask the neighbor but she is out of town. Do first time layers start out with small eggs?

Yes, their eggs will be small when they first start to lay. They will get a little bigger as they get older, I think I read somewhere about a month but I am not sure. Mine have been laying for close to 3 weeks and they seem to be about med sized now. At the begaining we could eat 8 eggs scrambled.

It takes 3 eggs to equal 2 of my larger eggs. You said we use 8 eggs.How many is we? I hope the eggs get bigger. My chickens have been laying for about 4 weeks.

my chickens started laying about 2 weeks ago.. we have gone from extra small to a big med.. i heard it can take 1-2 months to get to full size

I was wondering that too...mine are leghorns. Just got our first egg and it's between a small and MAYBE medium store bought egg but I didnt know how big they get. The farmer we used to get them from had HUGE eggs and I am fairly certain his were leghorns

You say 2 to 3 months to start laying full size eggs? Mine have been laying for about 3 weeks and the eggs are still small.

The chickens are large but small eggs. I'm feeding pellets with scratch and they are free range. Any thoughts?

I agree that it usually takes a couple of months before they are of good size. They will gradually get larger as they continue to lay. Do you have any pictures you can post?
