Good morning!
I am new here and thought I'd say hello.
We own a small farm (7 acres in total, around 4 in field, 3 in forest). So technically I a bit larger than a backyard. I hope you don't mind.
We are slowly turning our property into an organic farm, specializing in heritage vegetables.
We also have some chicken and ducks (so far).
We have three brown egg-laying chicken (I can't remember the breed, but they're pretty common)
We just added to our flock some Brahmas (2 males and 5 females) and 3 ameraucanas (1 male and two females). They're still young. Only one of the Brahma rooster is a young adult, and there is one slightly older hen, but the others are just a few weeks old.
As for our ducks, we have 10 young muscovy ducks. We originally bought 16 but unfortunately just two days after we got them, a raccoon got into their house at night, killed 5 ducks, severely injured one more (we had to put him out of his misery
), and slightly injured two more (they have since recovered). The ducks are now safe from predators, and we are trying to trap the raccoon.
The chicken have an enclosure, but the ducks are free range. They seem to already be doing a good job of eating bugs in the garden. Plus they are adorable! Most of them will gladly eat out of my hands.
I am hoping that in the future we might have other kinds of ducks and possibly some turkeys (in addition to a few goats, and some bee hives).
