Hi there. I have a chicken that is cross-bred Silkie and Rhode Island Red/Gamebird. She's about 4 1/2 months old and just started laying a few days ago. We've consistently gotten a tan-colored egg every day for the last 4 days. However, the eggs are all small--about half the size of my other breeds (I have a Rhode Island Red and an Easter Egger--both 2 years old). Does anyone know if this is the normal size of her eggs? Will they get larger as she gets older?

Silkies have small eggs so it is possible that the final egg size will be small. Having said that my hens have all started out laying medium eggs (save one of our EEs who started late and just went straight into large sized eggs). Our Australorp now lays Jumbo ++ eggs that don't fit well into our egg cartons, but when she started she was laying medium sized eggs. So, there is some hope for improvement :) The rest lay normal large size eggs now.
