The chickens i rescued today are black australorps and there owner said they are a year old which I’m not believing them I asked what feed she was feeding them she said corn and wheat….. I need help trying to figure out how old they are and what should I feed them starter/grower feed or layer feed. I also put de on them and noticed they have leg mites and I will guess they probably have mites on them as well I tried to take as many pictures as I can but there still scared of me if anyone can help that will be greatful

How much do they weigh? How well do they fly? How soft is their feathers? Are they laying? Their eyes look dark, so they're at least that age...

Keep them separated till they're in the clear...

I'd give them an egg layer feed, perferred with the extra protein. They're old enough for that. ;)

There feathers seem soft I would guess they can fly they move and flap there wings like crazy. I don’t know how much they weigh there is one that has a more developed come then the others the others have small comes. I don’t know if they are laying or not and there previous owner had 17 other chickens and 10 ducks but she was an older lady that has health issues and she couldn’t take care of them anymore and the grand daughter was giving them away to anyone that could take them. I have them separated there in our older coop that we don’t use anymore. I’m hoping they recover and become healthy birds again I just think they where getting enough nutrition with the corn and wheat. There body’s look like there a year older but all the pictures I have seen of the bread there comes are bigger and more colorful we are treating there leg mites tomorrow and will for a couple of weeks until they are better and will give them a good look over tomorrow and check for mites on there body’s.

Hi there! I have some Australorps, and the same coop as you too! Make sure they don’t peck each other, the bottom run area is pretty small, and overcrowding can make them bored, and they will peck each other. @Eggcessive @azygous and @Wyorp Rock are the experts that help me out, so they can totally help you too. Those leg mites and what the previous owner gave them to eat is my biggest concern.

From the pictures I have seen online these girls done have a bad case of leg mites one of them have like 4 scales lifted up on one leg and the other has 2 but I am just going to treat them all for leg mites just to be safe and also checking them over really good for other issues. My original girls don’t have leg mites or mites at all I just checked them last week there in a different area in another coop. The black australorps will not spend there while life in that coop I will let them out in a week or so I am just wanting to keep an eye on them and let them get use to us and there new home. They will not be mixed with my other girls we will keep them separate.

No, it’s great you separated them, they could be sick with something that could infect your other chickens.

Mine turned a year old in July, yours look a little older.

This is the same chicken, in case you were wondering. Sometimes their combs are a little pale.
Your girls look so good compared to these girls but my hope is that I can nurse them back to a good health and they will look good and there combs can look better! I give my buffs organic layer feed, kelp, some scratch also black soldier fly larva they have grit and oyster shells access as well.

Don’t worry! Once they get some proper layer pellets in them they will perk right back up. If it’s hot where you are, their combs will be pale.
