Small Flock #'s

I think 3 is a good number but if you're planning on starting with chicks (which I assume you would so they tame to you more easily, since it sounds like you want them as pets), you might want to get 4, as unfortunately you might lose one to illness or something else. I learned that the hard way and now I understand why people told me "If you want 3, get 4. If you want 4, get 5." For the same reason I wouldn't start with 2 or you might end up with a lone bird.

There's lots of great info here on breeds so I would check out the "Breeds" section and sort of cross reference that with whatever your hatchery is offering. I have an Orpington and she's my most friendly bird. I like Welsummers as well, all the ones I've had have been easy to handle.
 
If 4 is all u are allowed and u love chickens, get 4!
