You might want to change your craigslist ad to say "Free Roosters". Generally, no one is going to want to trade you a hen for a rooster. Most folks already have too many roosters.

i read a post on here one time about a small hen suffering damage to her legs and pelvis due to overmating by a larger male. And i was getting close to the same problem in my kids pen. Three roosters and six girls. But the males were big for their breed, and the girls small. And then the roosters tend to mature faster than the girls. Everyone's favorite was a lame MF D'Uccle, probably because she was low to the ground due to her bad leg, and then she couldn't get away fast enough. A couple days of her screaming was all it took for me to pull all the roos out into a separate area.

i just rehomed one roo on craigslist. Tried to list him for sale, but no takers. Once i posted him for free, a nice woman with acreage came and took him.

I have 1 Rooster and 19 Hens. Our other 20 Roosters look so good when i open the freezer door. Yum, whats for dinner!

Ok, yesterday I moved her out...I was feeding and they were going after her like crazy!!! so I did what I could ...I have a very large dog kennel, wired...I put her in that next to the coop....so she is close to the flock, but I covered the side that faces the kennel so the roos dont see her...

I then tarped off the top, and alittle around to give her shelter, and put feed and water in there and a roost. We cant do another coop for 2-3 days until honey is off...so she has to be there alone until then. We are going to built another smaller coop with dividers, maybe 3...so I can break them down. And we decided since there are no takers on trading for hens or selling the roos...they have to hit the freezer for dinner. so in about 1week I guess. Gosh they are beautiful roos....

But I have a question: I see that my RIRS are the more agressive roos...do they have a history of that? I mean they are mean....all 4 of them...or is it cause they are in with more roos??? Mean with not just the other roos, but with the hens

I've lost one bantum hen that way. I't was aweful! Then the beast started on another hen before, I could seperate them. They traumitized her so badly, she stayed hidden for weeks. I was afraid that they had injured her to where she couldn't lay any longer. But after 2 months, she has finally started laying again.

I posted a similar question about a week ago. I have 4 RIR roosters and 8 RIR hens. It got to the point where one rooster would mount, and before he had mated the hen, another rooster climbed on top of him! So it was 2 roosters on one hen. They all run like crazy and even fly up on my shoulders to get away from them.

I had my roosters advertised on craigslist with not takers, but today a CERT group I belong to had an email go out for a free Labrador. The dog was gone in 15 minutes, so I emailed the coordinator and asked if he would advertise 2 of my roosters (one is promised out but the people don't have their coop yet). He did, I sent pictures and within 15 minutes both roosters had been spoken for by people with flocks and land.

So, if you have any group you belong to and don't want to kill your roosters, try this. I am so glad that the 2 boys are going tomorrow...but not as glad as my hens will be!

Good luck.

Meanest roos I ever had were RIR. To be fair, it is an individual thing, not necessarily a breed thing; some breeder RIR's are wonderful... or so I have read.

Thing about mean roos is that this seems to be an inherited trait. So, mean roos do not live long here. Don't want to breed mean roos, thanks.
