are they showing any signs of illness? if not you can put a bit of acv in the water. are you feeding medicated chick feed? their poo is normal?

None of the other chicks are showing signs of illness. I don't know what normal poop looks like. First time chicken owner. I've seen some soft (clay brown) colored poop, but not sure who or how many are doing this. What does that mean?

When I get home tonight, I'm going to try the homemade gatorade concoction you recommended.

you dont have to change diet, if they are fine dont give it to them @davef72

let me throw you something may help you out with the poop

any blood or signs of weakness dont hesitate to ask for help... If you can see my signature below.. that incubation thread is the one I am always on, pop on we all chat about everything, but when someone needs help we get serious. and your welcome to join us anytime in the chit chat as well. Sometimes chicks can get too hot or too cold, get cocci and thats everywhere so dont think your in the clear from that. It's a 3x3 space cage with a heat lamp (70 degrees) in the corner. I checked several times last night, and they all seem to be getting along well. I've been keeping them in my laundry room in the back of the house. I'm trying to get them more accustom to my family handling them. It's a process, and I'm trying to be patient with it. I picked up a few last night, and they chirped out of fear; I guess.

I've even tried to give them a few bread crumbs to get them to feed out of my hand. They ended up fighting over the pieces...

Like I said earlier...never owned chickens before, but I'm a detailed person. These chicks will soon be living the highlife in this fancy coop I built

food is your friend I find food will help them overcome most shyness, its irresistable lol

A hand coming in from above is scarier for them and being grabbed (think bird of prey) so Id try not to do that too much, Its much better to get them to come to you. Once you have them somewhere you can sit on the ground with them you can add to the eating out of the hand by putting food on your knee etc till they are happy to climb on you to get it. I also try to start any touching them by scratching tummies at the front rather than again the hand coming from above or holding. Once they are climbing on your knee get them used to being picked up by just picking up to place on or off knees to treats rather than holding for an extended amount of time. They need to learn being picked up isnt a bit deal and thats easier if its only briefly to start with. Patience is your other friend ;-) Foods chicks love are chick weed, watermelon and Ive just discovered mine love finely grated zuchinni Even their regular chick starter with warm water added to just soften it can be used as a treat. Just dont overdo giving anything new to their diet or you will get diareah You may also need to get them used to trying the treat without your hand in first so they learn it is delicious (new is scary, even new food) and are then willing to risk your hand to get it next time.

Is that coop you are building going to have more run attached to it? It seems a bit small for ten full grown adult birds to spend all day in or will they be free ranging? Never underestimate how big they will end up. Our first coop that was purchased as supposed to fit 3 adult birds ended up a large nesting box ;-)

The entire dimensions of the coop are 9 deep x 11 wide x 7 tall. This does NOT include the cantilever where they will roost as well as nesting boxes.

They will stay in the coop except for the weekends when I can monitor them as the free range. We live in the middle of the woods with a fox and several hawks I've personally seen.

They are going to fit especially when just young but it doesn't leave much room for them to get out of each other's way when fully grown. You may find you get a lot of pecking arguing etc going on. They get testy went they don't have their personal space . I've only got 7 and my run (also not including their house) is easily 3 to 4 times that and I can't imagine having any less room for them. Only takes one to have a go at another or something to scare them and you have ten chickens all throwing them selves at the wire panicking. I would build with the option to extend in the back of your mind.
