Smaller breed that lays large eggs

If you want the added bonus of helping to save a heritage breed, there's a nice chart on the Livestock Conservancy's website. Some of the breeds may be hard to find, but they're worth the time and effort to search. "Rare" doesn't always mean "expensive," either. Most of the breeders in the program are ardent supporters of their critter-of-choice and do their best to keep costs down. If you're lucky enough to have an interested 4H child, many will practically give you chicks to raise. Our first few Nankins cost my daughter a picture of her birds at a show and a copy of the project page (no personal info involved) from her yearly report notebook. She has since "placed" several pairs with other 4H youngsters. It's a great way to get kids involved in the conservation process ... and you'll likely fall in love, as well!
The Pick-A-Chick chart is at:

That is awesome! Kudos to you and your daughter! I love the heritage breeds, we are starting out on a fixed income so I will keep your story in mind, thanks!!!

I have some Whiting True Blues from McMurray Hatchery. They are a smaller bird, they come in a variety of colors mine are: grey, white with black spots, and black. They lay a very large blueish egg almost every day. They are curious and friendly but don't want to be held. :) I very rarely stress my birds out by holding them anyway.

Wow, that one is new to me and sounds delightful! Thank you

I’d have to vote for the standard White Leghorn. All the ones I’ve had I would not consider “flighty”. They typically don’t like to be held but my daughters can catch them any time they want. :) Their eggs average x-large and rarely take a day off. Just determine how many eggs you eat per day then get that many chickens plus two so you’ll have extra eggs at the end of the week to make eggs salad or whatever. Good luck with your future flock!

Jaerhon fit exactly what the OP is looking for. Small bird that lays Medium to Large egg.

They use to be available, in looking quickly for a link of them for sale couldn't find one. Ideal is available in 2021, Sandhill is not available this year and so forth.

If you really searched you'd find them. Norwegian Jaerhon-
