My Coop
My Coop
I run smart tech on my coops and home.
The doors, ventilation, heat, light, security and cameras are all run via my smart home.
I use Samsung’s SmartThings hub as the basis for it all and it’s worked well.
There are a number of different parts and pieces and I’ve been trying different brands for peripheral components that control the different functions.
some parts are pricey but reasearch and experimenting have helped me fine less expensive options.
Do you want to run smart tech on your coops?
Do you run smart tech now?

Some of these are unnecessary (heat, light, etc.) I have an auto door, two security cameras, and fans put on a timer in the summer. That's the extent of my setup's smartness, and it's enough for me. All of those things have been very useful and convenient for me and I'm glad I did them, but I don't need anything else.

The light in winter gets the girls going earlier and gives me better egg production.
The heat is set very low (20F) and is there more to keep the water from freezing.

That makes sense. Winter lighting is a persona preference and controversial, as it forces the chickens' bodies against their nature (they need a slow season to rest and recover from a season of intense laying). I have a waterer with a built-in heating element that turns itself on when the temperature drops below freezing. Not sure if I should count this as another "smart" piece of tech, I guess it is. It takes care of the water issue without necessitating an actual heater in the coop.

I run water heating in my outside waterers. I have a 20 gallon water drum with nipples that I’ve just put in the mix. I have a heater in it ready for winter. It is controlled by the smart house to turn on below 35F.
My winter egg production is still down but only by 25-30%.

I have a simple light timer for supplemental lighting and thermo cube for the water heater,
and check on these things during morning chores to clean and top off feed and water.
