Smartest breeds? Dumbest breeds? Opinions?

Agree 100%. Of all the fowl I have ever had, Asils are far and away the smartest. Case in point, Asil cocks will not fight another cock through wire. They merely look for an opening or a way around the wire and then attack. Any other fowl will beat themselves litterally to death trying to fight through wire. Beats all I`ve ever seen.......Pop

I have no experience with Asil in the pure form. My American games likely have some in their background but they will fight through wire. Where can on get some of these quality Asil's? Personal experince needed for proper evaluation and putting them through my training regimen would see how their reputed smarts extends to my area of measure.

I think my Mottled Java is my smartest bird. Always alert and in the "know". Figured out how to push the coop door open. My dumbest is my Minorca. She is also a worry wart.

I'm pretty sure smartness comes from the eye of the beholder, but I have to through in a kudo to my one buff orp. Queen of Sheba she IS the first out of 7 to do everything and being the smallest is the top of the order, she does not hang around the flock she is off looking for new things to get into! She has taught 3 more to get on top of the compost pile and get her own worms and turn the pile for me!!!!!!

Luckly I have my food garden fenced with raised beds with soft netting or else we would have nothing save for her. Her cohort is one of my barreds the other has wound up at the bottom of the peck. Sheba will grab her comb and tweek it most days.

My others are two black Austalops not great and my others are brahmas nice but not hugely smart also. But I love them all!

I would say that shamos are the smartest if you measure animal intelligence in terms of their social skills with humans. Male shamos are very dog-like in their behavior; curious, confident, and they seem to enjoy the interaction with people. If you're looking at survival intelligence in a free-range environment, I'd go with American games.

I agree also.

Asils have a way of watching and learning. Hands down the smartest fowl you will ever own will be a Asil.
