Smelly Cat

You can try a human gas med - I'd go for a natural one first or Mylecon for babies (check with a vet about that one - many human drugs are toxic to cats).

The food you're feeding is one of the lower quality popular brand foods which are attributed to UT problems and the like. You might consider switching to a more premium brand to see if that helps. Believe it or not - they will eat less of a premium brand (not immediately as habits die hard, but eventually) and you'll not spend as much money as you think.

Another cool thing about indoor cats and premium brands is less poop, less litterbox odor. Because the food is more nutrictional, there is less waste, i.e. less poo, and hopefully less gas. I was amazed when we changed food; stinky poo went away.

I had a male cat die from urinary blockage. The vet told me it was because of the ash content in the cheaper foods. He recommended Iams,if I couldn't afford that then to use purina. the better quality has less ash for filler.
Also told me to use beano on my boxers gas problem. Not sure about cats.

I want to add here something you probably already know. If you do decide to switch foods, do it gradually or gas may not be your only problem

And yes, definitely check with the vet before giving any human meds to your cat.

Iams really isn't that great, the 2nd and 3rd ingredients are corn grits and corn meal. Try and find a food that doesn't contain corn. Corn isn't even a good food source for herbivores, it ferments in the stomach and can cause intestinal problems...such as a smelly cat.

Here are some brands without corn, Solid Gold, Wellness, Innova, Felidae. I had a list some where, I'll see if I can't find it again.

If you can't find a brand without corn, try and find one with corn as one the last ingredients. The ingredients are listed in order from containing the most to the least.

Hope this helps.

Count me in with the 'change your food to eliminaye smelliness, make poo less gross and improve efficiency of feed use' camp.

However I would also point out that smelliness can result from worms or coccidia (the cat version), so if a change of food does not solve the problem right off the bat you should have your vet run a fecal.

I do not mind switching to a higher cost brand as long as its not 50 bucks a bag. My main concern is I don't want a feed with wheat gluten. The reason these cats get meow mix is because someone else raised mom on it. I do think its the problem though. If I can find a purina brand that is not loaded with gluten I may try it. If it does not help I will try something else.
