smelly chicken run

No, you can do that, but it's a lot of work on an ongoing basis so it is worth trying to fix the problem *constitutively* as much as possible, too. See my 'fixing muddy run' page for options, link posted above.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Excellent info on the Muddy Run page, thank you Pat!

I LOVE to use the pellets as well. I converted a horse stall into my chicken coop (12 x 12') and used what I had leftover from the horses. Took the stall down to the horse mats that are on 8-10 " of pea gravel. Spread saw dust, then pellets, then stall dry and then topped off with shavings.

Using the pellets for my banties - LOVE them. For my big chicks I used the pine shavings and man did they start to stink.

The pellets dry the poo within minutes and then it's easy to scoop out the dried poo every couple of days. Very little smell, hardly any dust, doesn't get kicked up in the food/water as easily.

Haven't tried it in the run as I get FREE wood chips.

Thanks for the great advice.

What size are the pellets that you get? The only pellets I've seen around here are the kind used in pellet stoves and they're large - is that what you are referring to? Can't imagine actually being able to scoop out the poop from these size pellets. Thanks!
