Smelly run

We've had about two super heavy rain showers each day for two weeks. The chicken run is just an awful,stinky mess. How can I help get rid of the smell? My dad suggested putting some shavings down. What do you think?

Shavings won't do anything for the stink. If you can till the run that would be best.

Sweet pdz with shavings should work but let the ground dry as best as possible first.
Is your run covered? If not I suggest covering it otherwise don't put shavings down.

Do a search on deep litter.

I would suggest 12 to 18 inches deep to start with, all "brown" material.

Sweet PDZ mixed with a construction grade sand. We just had rain here (strangely in July), and although it wasn't a lot it was enough to make the chicken yard stink. Covering my yard isn't an option as it's 10 feet wide and 30 feet long. If the chickens and ducks want coverage then they go hide in the coop. But this week I'll be doing a mix of the sand and PDZ. The construction grade sand drains really well and the chickens love to take dust baths in it.
