I have been working on pens all day and finally got them done. I am moving some birds around and waited to move them to their new homes after they had all gone to roost in their old pens. Of course its dark so I have my flashlight ( and my trusty S&W 357mag cause I'm scared of the dark!!!) and I've moved my last chicken to its new home. So just out of the blue, I go check on my laying birds. They are the only ones that didn't have any changes made today. As soon as I walk in and shine my light down, I see a possum running from the hanging feeder!!! So I take out my 357, and follow him into a shed behind my coop. Being that they are ever so stupid, he "hides" in the corner right out in the open. POW he's a goner. Well I look over behind some old heaters, there's another one!!!! POW, he bites the dust!!!! Then I go grab the pliers (I may sound like a sissy but I ain't touching a possum with my hands, gloves or not!!!) and when I get back, there is another one sticking his head out. BIG mistake mr possum!!! At first I thought it was possum number 2 and somehow I had missed. I was wrong. So like the ones that came before him, POW he bought the farm. I went back into the coop thinking that I would find a whole herd of the nasty little things running around and checked under my nest boxes which are about 8 inches off the ground. There were about 6 eggs that had been broken open and eaten. So not only have they been eating chicken feed like there's no tommorw, they have been eating my eggs too!!!!! I'll be Possum proofing that coop tomorrow. Thought I had been doing a pretty good job. Little did I know!!!!! Here are the evidence photos from what I'm calling "Possum hunt 2010"

Tell me these things aren't EVIL!!!!

Ya know, it certain countries these would be skinned and cooked.

just saying....

We had a huge one in one of our chicken pen a couple of nights ago. We go out to take care of that one and I notice that the sillkies are up and the motion light is on over by their pen. There was another one there. my husband took care of that one first since it wasn't in the pen. Then it was off to the other pen. He came out and went under the barn. We didn't get him so I sit up a live trap for him and 2 nights later he was caught.

My grandfather grew up way back in the hills during the Great Depression. He told me of how his daddy would catch possums and put them in a cage to "fatten them up." For a couple of weeks, they'd feed the possum sweet potatoes, cornbread & buttermilk to get him ready for the dinner table. I told my grandpa that if it was me, I would've just eaten the sweet potatoes, cornbread & buttermilk myself and said to heck with the dang possum.
