I have a broody hen too. It is my very first time ever having a broody. She had 15 eggs under her. 4 was plastic eggs. I took all them out because she has crooked toes but I did place some other eggs under her for her to hatch. She was very calm when I took her eggs from her too. She had so many eggs that when I'd go out she had some not under her.

hello.. well got that place and just waiting to start getting moved in. i already apparently have fourteen chickens now, as buddy said i could just keep the seven bantams of his. The belgium mille de' feur de uccle has has been making the cutest tiniest crow like a toy, for the past couple weeks. nothing from th rest so far, and he is seeming to try to court and harrass the other six, so wondering if i lucked out and only got one cockerel (but come on what are the odds?1.. LOL). he is the only one with remotely any comb or wattles ect and his are huge and thick, while rest are thin and very small, but reddening. also ive been throwing greens and dry matter in for them to nest, and one of the black ones I that thought was austrolorp, has started building a tight little nest to rest in during day even, and someone has layed a couple tiny jelly bean sized eggs. my gma has told me that i need to take hers as she cannot take cvare of them anymore. im not sure if they are all four cocks or not, but one is half size of others and has pea comb and getting what look like sickles. the other three look like orps more like think said supposed to be, but have huge combs and wattles coming in, and they seem to be looking plucked still on back ends. would they be plucking each other, as they looked plucked on back end when she bought, and wonder if seller plucked cockerel feathers coming in.. ??? ill be getting two conformed laying and ready to go broody hens with a cock bantam true ameraucana.
so starting out again ill have the seven already been caring for for my buddy, four of gma's, and three or four from pigeon pal that originally only wanted..
so out of all these im betting i dont get any decent layers or hens hardly at all, so anyone still rehoming standard EEs, ameraucaunas, or maybe even OEG hens, chiks, or hatching eggs, next month or on (after i settle in and sort out what will be put out to free range ect, and what will be decent layers or broodies)?

Laughingdog- Congrats on the place where you will be able to have chickens again! I just recently gave away all but 3 of my EE/OEs from my Easter hatch.

On your chicks with the plucked backsides: do you think some of the other chicks are picking at them? And yes they can/will pick/pluck each other especially if they are crowded. Just be careful because once they see blood they will not stop picking and kill the weakest first. Its hard to find locally but I have used a black salve made by Rooster Booster. Hello everyone. I've been on byc for a couple of months and just found this thread! I live in white pine and just started raising chickens about a month ago. We've got silkies. My son has decided he'd like to show them so I just bought 4 that seem to be decent quality. I just wanted to say hello and I hope to meet some of you in the future!

and thanks for stopping by to join us. Would love to see pics of your chicks. I have never shown & know absolutely zero about silkies. I am sure you can find someone, a thread or maybe join a silkie club and get some help on how to show. I know I have joined the Orpington club in hopes of learning more about them. good luck

Thanks so much! We're learning. I've ordered him a beginners guide to showing chickens and a standard of perfection book to get started. This is a pic of our rooster, Peck. My son added Peck-er but I quickly changed it. He's only 6!

The hens' names are Dorithy(splash) Blanch(white) and Rose(blue).

They look very nice to me and Braxton looks very pleased. I am sure you will do fine at the shows. I know there are several coming up in the fall: 2 in Knoxville & 1 in Newport. The one in December in Knoxville is going to be a big show: its the ABA Nationals and the other 2 are nice little local shows (but sometimes they have a large number of entries).

Ive probably drove all yall nuts on here about the mites my chickens got lolzz. Anyway , Ive been doing what littlechicklet said to do with the ivemectin but, they still just keep coming on ,they die down after each treatment then I go to treat them again they have tons of missing feathers my roo has feathers missing on his chest . I have a ? how does treating his back help his chest and neck ? Secondly they are growing back feathers in the spots that they were missing feathers, they seem to be growing them back . Then they are loosing feathers in other places, and the places that they are now loosing feathers in are raw . Basically by the time I treat them for 1 spot they have feather loss in another place . Im in dire need of help . I don't understand why they wont just go away its starting to drive me crazy and everyone on this thread . Please help.

So sorry for all your trouble. I just had a mite outbreak on 3 of mine. The Ivermectin works by getting absorbed via their skin. You must get it on the skin & not on the feathers or it will not work. You also must clean their housing. Be sure to spray the coop down with Permerthrin (you can pick it up at TSC, Lowe's or CoOp) after you clean it. Mix the Permethrin according to the directions on the bottle & either use a pump sprayer or maybe a spray bottle. Make sure when you are spraying the coop to get the roosts really good because some mites hide in the knocks & crannies. Lock the chickens out of the coop and allow it to dry for several hours before letting them back in. You can also mix the Permethrin & spray the chickens with it but I do not know the mix ratio on that and if you decide to spray the chickens directly its easier to do this when they go up on the roost at night.

Can you see the mites? They are tiny little specs & if the infestation is severe they will crawl on you from you chickens. Just asking so you can be sure you are treating for the correct thing. Check the vent area & see if you can see them. There are some types of mites that hide during the day in the coop and come out at night to feed on your chickens so you will not see them during the day I wouldn't think.

With all that said this is only my way of dealing with mites/lice. Use your own judgement on treating your chickens.
