sn0wwhite's Wichita Coop for the Twin Cities

sn0wwhite have you tried using the coop section on this website? This is what we used to help us build ours.

Oh, yes, JanetS, when I'm not working on the coop or at work, I just look at everything I can find!
Made a little progress on the box, but the rain is blowing right at us, so we are on a rain delay.

Nice start on the nest box, it has been raining pretty good here all day also. Looks like I am a little late but here is a picture of mine, it is covered cause mine are not laying yet and I dont want them in there. My framed opening was 15 x 33. It is not quite centered. The nest box its self is 20 inches tall and 17 deep.

Here is picture of how I did the window I framed the inside opening a little smaller than the outside, then I stapled down the hardware cloth and then framed the outside opening, outside opening is 31x12.5 and the window is 30.5x12.

Thanks for that and the window picture is REALLY helpful. Got the nest box done today and it is not beautiful. I'm hoping that I can add some trim later and make it look nicer and cover some gaps. In my defense, I read on here about someone who couldn't decide between having the top or back open so they did both and I liked that idea so I did that too. The box is functional and will be secure even though I'm not pleased with its current look. Please make improvement suggestions!

That is a wonderful nestbox--your chickens will be so spoiled once the coop is finished!

What don't you like about the looks? In my book....if it functions properly, it's beautiful :)
Maybe paint them blue?

What kind of latches will you put on them?

Ah yes, I am rethinking my idea of beautiful every minute I go along now. The original Wichita coop just looks so perfect. Well, I gave it my best shot but we are having significant departures now from the pictures. This is the morning' progress with the nest box wide open. Taking a brunch/Bloody Mary break now.

I know the girls hate it now, but they will grow to LOVE it. Our girls used to run to the garage because that's where we kept them while we were building the coop. Now they run to their coop/run at night. It's so rewarding. You are going to be *thrilled* that they have such a nice space this winter!!
