Snake attack

I checked on my 5 chicks this afternoon, only to find one dead. It’s face and upper body were wet, but the back half was completely dry. Is it possible we have a snake trying to eat the chicks? What can I do to protect them? What else could have happened to the chick?

Sounds very much like a snake tried to swallow the chick but was not big enough to get the job done. Hardware cloth will keep snakes out.

What are you using for waterers?

Agree that baby chicks have to be in hardware cloth, larger gauge wire will not keep them safe enough.
