This is probably a stupid question, but for those of you whose chickens are brave enough to eat snakes (mine took the first step of playing keep away with one today, but then let it go), if they just slurp them down like worms, is there going to be an issue with having a live snake in their crop???? Or do they usually kill and pick it apart first?

Your right it is a stupid question. It's kinda hard to tell what they do when I'm running to the house screaming like a little girl. aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, snnnnnnnnnaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaakkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkeeeeeeeeeeee!

Thanks, guys, I figured it would be fine, but I couldn't help but wonder how that actually works as I contemplated the 14-inch snake after they let it go...

Two days ago my gardeners found two rattlesnakes, a small one early in the morning, and then a large one late in the afternoon. One of the guys brought me the first one headless, but still squirming, in a big Dixie cup. He asked what he should do with it, and after I squealed and jumped onto the nearest chair with my skirts pulled over my knees I told him to give it to the chickens. He looked at me like I was looney, but did it anyway. What a ruckus! The two big Barred Rocks took it and ran, and the other 16 assorted hennies took off in hot pursuit! Hilarious! We also dug up a rat's nest in the barn (thinking it was a gopher hole) with eight babies in it. They also went to the hens who inhaled them. The gardeners now joke and say that my hens are not chickens, they are cats (for their obvious love of mousey things). Yesterday when I handed out cartons of eggs to the guys I told them to be careful when they crack the eggs because some of them might contain snakes. It took them a second to get the joke, and the terrified looks before they did were priceless!!
