Snake had duckling about halfway down (Now w/pics)

Quote:
Same here! It was a Texas Rat Snake (about 5 feet and as thick as an average persons leg- it was obviously well fed) and I was surprised that it could start swallowing it while it was still alive- cause generally they do coil- my pet snakes even coil a thawed frozen mouse which obviously is dead. I think what happened was that when it struck it got the head and just started swallowing, the pic doesn't show it but the duck has a ring of down that is missing/very short and it looks like that is where the snake originally grabbed it. The duck had snake 'slime' down past his crop and over his shoulders- gave it a good bath to get it all off.

That is one lucky duck! Hopefully the snake won't come back to try again.

Several years ago I saw this garter snake try to catch a toad. He had it by the foot for quite a while until he finally let go and the toad just hopped away. There is no way the snake would have been able to actually eat the toad.

Got a snake problem here myself (black/rat snakes). They live in an old well on our property. At first we let them live because they do help control the mouse/rat population, control bugs, etc. But then they started leaving skins/sheds in our attic/basement. Then we started losing baby birds out of nests on our property, etc.... you get the picture. Most of them are at least 3 feet long, but sometimes we get 5-6 foot ones!!!

Well enough was enough and we started killing them. I know, I know, I'm sorry for the reptile lovers, but now I am afraid we will lose our eggs if they find them.

Never thought they would go after the chickens! Ours are about 8 weeks old.

Hope your ducky continues to do well!

Wow, what a story! Glad your little duckling is OK.

Do think perhaps it was a juvenile snake learning the ropes?

Sorry, I don't know anything about snakes. The most exciting snake we have around here is a Spotted Adder.

So glad you could save your baby!!

I'm glad your ducky is ok! Word of advice (even though it might be superstitious) - I'm a vet tech and every animal that comes in named Lucky (which is usually b/c it survived something when it was younger) ends up having something not so lucky happen to it later on down the road. We're convinced it's a curse that goes with the name - could be a coincidence but why take a chance?
