Snake In The Coop!!!!

Job well done

Any snake is welcome around my house except pets that have been released as they are not native and really mess with the balance of things.

I have had a couple of rat snakes in my coop, too. I figure a couple of eggs here and there fair pay for keeping the rodents down. The only time I killed one is when he ate a nest of chicks.

Glad you didn't kill that Rat Snake. When I was a kid I used to catch snakes for a local pet shop. Boy, did my brother and I get ripped off by the owner. I think we decimated the snake population for miles around. We did catch a 6 foot rat snake that we could have sold to him for 6 bucks, a dollar a foot was what we were getting. We let her go, we were catching on that we were getting taken and it wasn't helping the snakes at all. We quit soon after that. I still feel bad about what we did to the local population of all different kinds of snakes. It was close to 40 years ago and most of that area is now suburbs. Where I live now we only have garter snakes and copper bellies. Not much of a risk to my chickens.
