Your story and the way you wrote it are fantastic! And I agree with the other folks here who say that you should submit it for publication!!
I'm scared to death of snakes and the chicken that I'm foster parenting loves to eat the little garden snakes she finds. yeesh! And she'll eat them whole and still alive if I let her. ugh! She's now eaten 8 and I have learned to always have a big shovel in hand because they always turn up in the least expected places. The chicken, Henrietta, finds the snakes, sees me grab for the shovel and then runs at full chicken speed away from me while I give chase and yell "Drop it! DROP IT!" in the hopes that she will so I can at least kill the darn thing before she eats it.

It's got to funny to watch us because my first inclination is to run away from a snake- not towards one and I hope my neighbors get a giggle whenever it happens. I think your SO deserves a medal for bravery and for creative use of a ride on mower! Bully for her!!
