Snake Question

Only a small snake can get through that size of wire; they won't be big enough to eat an egg. In fact they would be more likely to be eaten by the chickens. Be advised though that snakes are very enterprising and if the 1/2 inch wire is only 2-3 feet tall (or possibly higher if it's a very large snake or has something to "stand" on), a snake will just crawl up the side of the pen until it can get it's head through bigger wire holes and chin itself up and through the larger wire. As an example I have 3 feet of small-holed wire around the bottom of the chainlink dog run my ducks live in. Yesterday afternoon there was a 5 ft. black snake in the pen with just the tip of his tail still hanging on the chainlink wire to show how he had crawled through. He was making a valiant effort to eat an egg but it was too big for him. The ducks were completely nonchalant about the whole thing and the snake was ignoring them too. I was sitting outside watching him just to see what he would do; after he finally gave up and crawled back out of there I took him on an all-expense paid trip to our horse/cattle barn a mile down the road so he won't be tempted to go into the chicken coop and eat smaller eggs next. FYI I have at least a dozen large black snakes in and around my yard as well as some smaller ones; this is the first time one has shown any interest in one of the pens/eggs.

2 Days ago a 5 foot black snake got in my newly built coop made of 1/2 inch Hardware cloth, wood and a tin roof. I guess it squeezed through the small space between the tin roof and wood. It's head was not much bigger than a quarter but it managed to eat a 7 week old polish chick! I did not know that it was even possible for a Black snack to eat a chick that big! It appears that he first tried to eat my 4 week old D'uccle bantam but he was able to fend it off. I am new to this and am going to chalk this up as some kind of Freak snake deal. If it happens again, I guess I'll just start selling the freak snakes as breeder stock.

Ha-ha. Wouldn't it be funny to be driving down your road and see him thumbing his way back to your place!

I do love to see the creative ways people do allow these beautiful creatures to live. Kudos to you.
