SNAKE!!!!

He might be going after those eggs too. We had a snake in the barn eating the eggs, we put a golf ball in the nest, he ate it and got stuck on his way out the crack in the boards. Wacked his head off.

Just an idea for future consideration: I've heard from a lot of people that guineas will chase off snakes, even rattlers. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to have a few "watchdog" guineas around the chicks?
is guinea a breed of chicken?

If they are as noisy as you say, I'm not sure if I want one. Not only that, but by the time I'm able to get one, the chicks will be too big anyway.

A guiena refers to guinea fowl. They are an entirely different species than chickens. They can be beneficial but are different from chickens in some ways. And they can be obnoxiously noisy.

Kingsnakes mostly eat mice when they are small, and OTHER SNAKES when they get older.

They seldom eat chickens, and in a few more weeks your birds will be too big for it

I have kids, so I'm not so sure I want one living on my porch. It wont bother me if it's somewhere out by the road or something.

I would give my right arm to have about a dozen of those living in my yard! We have a serious rattlesnake problem around here and those would solve that! I was actually bitten shortly after moving in (was dry bite by a baby...my one lucky warning chance I guess) one evening in my front yard! If you can get a kingsnake, be HAPPY! :)

thank god your bite was a dry bite. The owner of the house told me that he has only seen king snakes here. Im new to having chickens and I'm trying not to be overly obsessive, but when I saw a snake and I didnt know what it is, it drove me a bit nuts. Not to mention, it bit me. and i didnt even know until i felt the tingle. thank god it wasnt poisonous.

i have a fair population of rat snakes. my environment would make most snakes happy including copperheads & water mocasins, but in 20 yr's of living here have only seen the rats. i'm grateful to have the rat snakes - the only way they're deadly is when they surprise me & i nearly kill myself jumping away from them after screaming loud enough to wake the neighbors.

Yes, I felt VERY lucky to have my little warning bite! The hospital still insisted I stay all night. I got a tetanus shot and had my vitals monitored constantly. And I have to say, as much as I adore snakes (I have 5 pet snakes :) ) I would still flip out a bit having one attached to my hand, so I understand that completely! :)

when i was younger, i had a boa. found out that the king kills the same way as a boa, by constriction. I was bit more than once by mine and it doesnt hurt, it just surprises you. now that i have chickens, i dont want them around. i want chickens for eggs, so i dont want snakes eating them all on me
