Snakes!.... *graphic*

That first pic is DEFINITELY NOT a Ball Python. I too own one and their markings are very random and they don't have any markings on their belly scales, they are white/pale color. At first blush I thought it was too but a few seconds more and it became obvious.

Good kill, be careful!

Well CRAP, I so did NOT need to hear about anyone near ME finding the buggers. We're in a pretty wooded area, thus the possums, raccoons, skunks and foxes... and I've heard of others a block or more away finding copperheads... but so far not hear... dang dang dang. Murphy and Mother Nature REALLY need to lay off already.

Bull snakes do eat rattlers which is why we never kill them if we find them. We just kindly relocate them back out in the prairie and if they find their way back again we stuff em in a cloth bag and drive about 5 miles away and let them out there!! We have both rattlers and bull snakes here and the occasional garden snake. I hate them all!!!! The copperheads look really similar to the rattlers. Also bull snakes will mimic a rattler and shake their tail so don't kill every snake that shakes it's tail!!!
Like my Corn Snakes :D They shake their tails when they are scared XD

That first snake is a Ball Python a snake that is not native to any north american area. I would assume that you killed someones pet or decendent of one. This snake is a great pet and we have one. The other I think was a copperhead as you supposed.

Definitely not a ball python and growing up in a lake community in CT I can attest that copperheads are vicious beasts!

I had one snake last year that was eating eggs so I guess it was a non poisonous, however this year I killed a copperhead in the vicinity of the henhouse and in the past 3 months have killed 3 huge snakes:( inside the chicken house. One was in a nest....yikes I almost put my hand in his mouth which was wide open . I turned on the light to be sure what was there as it was dusk and it was sooo big. Looked to be a cottonmouth. Had to shoot several times as it slithered toward us. Living in NW Louisiana, we have all sorts of snakes and now that we have chicks it seems like they have spread the word and it's scary. A few days ago one was coiled on the shelf above the nest. My granddaughter killed it and it was 4ft 5 inches long. I let my hens free range from noon til they go to perch. I'm beginning to be afraid of entering the henhouse.
Does anyone know a deterrent to keep them away??? Will sulphur spread around the house help? I've heard "snake-Away" doesnt work.

This really doesn't have anything to do with my chickens but we have been finding tons of snakes in our yard this spring. I'm guessing they're trying to find water since we're going through an extreme drought here. I usually just enjoy them and let them be. Most of the snakes have been garter snakes and rat snakes, which I don't mind. I even pick them up and play with them for a bit

....but if they're poisonous and end up in my backyard...they aren't going to make it out alive. So far in a about a month I've killed 3 copperheads. They haven't been over 2 feet but they're still just as dangerous as the big ones. I don't like killing snakes, I think they're beautiful BUT I have 2 kids so I'm taking any chances...Is anyone else noticing more snakes?

a shovel isn't just for digging lol
