Snakes

In E. Texas we have chicken snakes but I have only had to deal with 3 in 3 years. I always check my nest boxes before I put my hand in.This is a picture of one woven in the chicken wire inside my coop!

I am in NC, and we do have our fair share of snakes! Black snakes and King snakes are the only ones I have encountered in my coop but they are just egg thiefs and have not caused major trouble...

C. Conner- That looks about like the size snakes here, I always check the nesting boxes as well!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. I don't even like to see the ssssssssss word. Anything that makes me scream like that - can't be good to have around.

It doesn't matter if it's black or King...it would cause me to hurt myself!

I’ve seen a couple black snakes in the 6 years I’ve had chickens, then one day this guy was in the nest box I had wondered why the hens didn’t seem to be laying as well as usual...

I would have died!!!

I almost did! My nest boxes are at eye height and around a corner, so I was eye to eye with the snake when I first saw it. I did yell, and he dropped the egg and went behind the box. I had to go in the house to get the phone to call someone to help and when I came back out I took his picture. My friends son came over and caught him and took him to the back of their property, far away...
