Snapper anyone?

Never eaten turtle but hey I would be game!! Kinda curious how you get em out of their shell? How do you cook them?

What i do is drill a hole through the back edge of the shell(painless),and tie a rope to them and attach it to something sturdy.I provide a kiddie pool for them,change water daily and feed them scrap chicken.They have several different flavors including chicken,depending on what piece of meat it is.

Wow I was just kidding about the chicken part

but hey, sounds good as long as the "other" parts dont taste like fish

People say there are 5 flavors of meat in snapper,chicken,pork,beef,fish and i can't remember the other one.To me it all tastes the same,some pieces of meat have a stronger flavor than others.

I agree some pieces are stronger, or tougher, but most taste similar. I have been eating them forever, and get my share a year too. Nice looking turtle you caught. I also hold mine for a week or so to flush them out, only instead of feeding chicken I don't feed them anything. Just change the water daily like you said.

Wow!

Last weekend I was taking the dog for a walk and saw something huge moving like a sloth down by the pond. It must have see me and dove into the pond. That thing was the largest snapper i've ever seen. It was huge.

How do you go about catching them in a pond?

I have in the past but don't anymore since I read this about them "The biggest problem with snapping turtles is they are long lived predators. Therefor they tend to contain high levels of contaminants such as pesticides and heavy metals". Well actually that's just part of it. Really I'm just to lazy to clean one anymore. LOL A chicken is much easier to skin. Plus, if it bites you, you won't lose a finger.

To catch them we use trot lines and cut bait...

I use trot line and gizzards as bait,but the big ones will straighten the hooks or break the line so i made a box trap out of old oven racks,it has a trap door so when they go in they can't get back out.They say the record for a common snapper is 68lbs,there was one raised in captivity that was 86.The biggest i've ever caught was 64lbs,the shell measured 19 inches.
