Snares are illegal to use in most states anyway.
Most have devices that allow them to tighten, but not loosen, so if an animal pulls the least bit too hard, it WILL choke itself to death
Out of curiosity, how much experience do you have with snaring? As far as non target animals, I have caught 3 dogs, 2 cats, and amazingly one GHO. All were released unscathed. Unless a snare becomes entangled I have never had a fox choke itself to death.
edited to add 2 cottontail rabbits to that list of 'non target' animals that were safely released.
