Sneaky Pekin

@Miss Lydia wanted me to share my little runner ducklings 2 days old you too @Jpat. The 2 yellow ones are from a different family and are both fawn/white. Mine are from a black runner drake and fawn/white moms. @Pyxis what do you think of the colors? they all have bibs and black feet.

These are the parents of all but the yellow ones:

Cute :love

The colors make sense. I see the 'bibs' go down the belly which is normal because they are actually pied, from the fawn and white moms :) Fawn and white involves two copies of the blue gene, aka silver, so all the blue babies make total sense. What you should have there are all blue pied ducklings. The darker ones do look blue pied. The lighter ones though, maybe they're just a lighter blue, OR I know there was talk of your drake maybe being split to chocolate. Those might be what you'd call lilac pied. Chocolate and blue together.

I'd love to see pictures as they grow :)

I’ve decided to let her sit and we are watching closely. I haven’t seen any other birds approach the nest. The other ducks have been sleeping outside the coop under the boxwoods in the run ever since the weather got warm. My other duck has been laying there. The chickens won’t even lay in their nest box that’s closest to her nest. Everyone is giving her a wide berth. So I feel like whatever happened to the other eggs was Liza (the sitter), and I’m trusting that she knows what to do since robbing her of the opportunity to hatch seems mean at this point since the eggs are likely very close to hatching.

Okay, I checked the nest after she got up to have a swim. There are still three. Two are very dark, which I assume is the color of the duckling showing through. One looks more like it was recently laid, so idk about that one. I guess it could be just a really light duckling since they’re SA Pekin mixes. I left her to her business after the morning chores.
