Two days ago I got two 5 week old chicks. Driving home, we heard what we thought was a sneeze. When I put them in the coop, they seemed active, with good appetites, but I noticed more sneezing, so I took them out of the coop and put them in a crate, covered with a towel w/ a heating pad on low under one end. Yesterday I picked up water soluble oxytetracycline, which was the only antibiotic the feed store had. They've been on that 30 hours. Today, I made a small, covered pen on the lawn and put them outside. They stayed mostly in the shady part, so I think they were warm enough. I cleaned a little crust off one of the Wyandotte's nares. The eye on the same side is also watery. The Faverolle has no crusting or eye watering, but is sneezing. Their breathing sounds a little "rattley"- more so at night. Their poops are either light brown and fairly soft, or normal looking. It's nighttime and I've got them back inside as before w/ fresh shavings.
They came from a private party who brings in vaccinated chicks from a hatchery, and raises them to 5 weeks to sell. She keeps them in long ventilated boxes under lights until they're big enough to move outside. The boxes hold a large number of chicks and looked clean. The two I got were out free ranging and locked up at night. I don't know how long they were outside, or how warm the coop was. Nights have been in the low 50's, daytime 70's..
