Speckledhen (forgive me, I forgot your name), I'd echo what you wrote about the smell and the early stages. Thanks for posting that info and link.

I'd also echo what you and Hinkjc wrote regarding Peter Brown. He's a great guy and I wouldn't take anything away from the excellent advice he gives others - including me. I will also say that while he's in business to sell products from his store, he doesn't hold back one iota at saying, "You really don't need..."

With regard to The Chicken Health Handbook, I want to reiterate that Gail Damerow wrote the book with the help and proofreading of many avian veternarians. Not just one PhD but many vets.

And for the record, it was not my intention to display any "attitude" but rather to simply state that the post taking exception to what I said about IC did not have an authoritative source identified and to note that it would be helpful to have it - as well as to state that I should have done so in the first place too.

Now, to get back on track with the OP, my suggestion depending on how bad the symptoms are at this time is to treat with either Gallimycin (or some other "mycin" or give them a shot of Tylan. The Tylan seems to have done the trick for me in short order.

Sounds like you have MG, MS or CRD. Very doubtful that you have Coryza.

If you do not have a horrid smell from the nostrils, you are good.

MG and MS are microplasma type organisms. They are NOT bacteria and are closer to the virus family.

You can give Terrimycin in the water to keep any SECONDARY bacterial infections at bay.

Chickens DO NOT get colds.

I appreciate everyone trying to get on track to help the OP. Good morning, everyone.

I agree with Guinea Goonie. We just need to keep in mind that when we don't know what we are trying to treat, as symptoms of several diseases are quite similar, we should remember that antibiotics will not kill a virus, which is one thing that is the same with avians, humans or any other species.

To the OP, please update us on your hen when there is something more to report.

Terramycin is one of the most useless antibiotics ever made

. I would opt for the Tylan injection IF you have a RD, but to me, with the symptoms you have CLEARLY displayed, I would be leaning more toward environmental issues (but who am I). After all, speckledhen DID say let's NOT jump to the worst case scenario.

I would also check into Gapeworms.....with the gaping over days, I would not think (but than again, who am I) that it would merely be a stuck piece of food, but hey, I'm no expert

With the wet environment most people have been having, gapeworms have become a nuisance.

Still no change in my girl so I'm not sure if I should do anything - am tempted to let her ride it out a bit and see what happens? She's been sneezing and leaking for over 10 days now with no improvement or decline...

Nasal discharge is clear and does NOT smell like anything.

No coughing, weight loss or any indication she is otherwise sick.

I haven't yet found a vet who will treat chickens but if it comes to the point of me needing to get some meds for her, I'll get it done.

I only observed the stretched neck and opening mouth (gaping) when she was laying, she did it about 3 times in one minute and that was all (not before and not since). None of the other birds are doing it, so I'm thinking it was just a stretch??

Haven't caught any rats yet, the traps go off but they seem to escape.

Should I start a new thread on the safety of using poisoned bait to kill the vermin? I'm so afraid to use any poison around the flock, what if a mouse ingests it and then gets in the coop and the birds kill and eat the mouse?

I don't want to go off topic, sorry....

Found the book and have been flicking through it, have you seen any abnormal droppings in the coop or run?

At the moment Im leaning towards Upper Respaitory Infection (sp?)
