You did the right thing reporting the Louisa woman. Hearing things like this makes me want to hunt her down and provide the same 'treatment' to her as she does to her poultry, except in freezing conditions! How anyone could do that is just plain wrong. I hope she reads this & gets the idea this is totally unacceptable behavior. And the same 'treatment' should be a good lesson for her supporting lawyers and supporters, as well.

Necropsy test results came back

Highly contagious. Takes 3 weeks to incubate and take form.
Once they get it, its for life. They WILL pass it on to all other chickens introduced.
Meat and eggs are fine to eat.
But the longer the chickens have it, the more problems will develop.
Baby chickens have a high mortality rate with this infection.
I will never be able to sell my flock at swaps or anything now.
All because I thought I could rescue a few chickens from a lady.

So!
That being said I would like to depopulate and start fresh. But that will never happens cause of the GF
So a lifetime of sick helpless chickens it is...

before you cull or give up on birds i suggest trying things no one else thinks of

and if you dont sell the birds or give them a way is it a big deal if you breed with them for your own use? no its not in fact the next generation will be more resistant to it then the last so over time as long as you dont give any birds away to people that have chickens/fowl already i dont see a problem and also if some one insists on buying a bird from you tell them everything.

as for something most people dont think of try some GSE for it it does wonders for humans why not birds as well? worth a shot imo heck its been proven to kill MRSA the worst thing around that humans can get its also been proven to treat avian influenza in chickens, who knows might just clear it right up

alot of people try antibiotics from vets and wonder why they dont work, well they are just 1 compound where GSE is 100's that all have anti-bacterial properties heck thats why most things have became resistant to human drugs as well (it was tested on 90 different viruses, 70 different strains of fungi and 200 strains of bacteria and killed them all in a harvard lab test, and proved more effective in cleaning then iodine or 70% alcohol)

But if anyone has they havent posted results on the internet yet.

My chickens symptoms went away for about a month, and now since its been damp the past week, a chicken has started gurgling again.
My new roosters crow is now weak
And I've also got 13 two week old peeps that are in the coop with mama
My GF is in denial and I fear I'll loose the chickens this winter due to not culling the ones that I should have

Until someone actually posts some definitive evidence that these antibiotics and such work, and work LONG TERM, then culling the sick chickens IMMEDIATELY is my best advice

Sometimes my chicken just shakes her head, and I feel drops of water on me. When I check, her nose is really runny. I tried everything, but nothing seems to work. In a book, it said to feed them olive oil. I haven't tried that yet, because olive oil is oily, and I don't want it to get on her feathers. Also, it might not be good for her digestive system. Any other way?

I suspect people may mean grape seed extract and not grapefruit seed extract. After reading this I looked over several studies which -did- find a significant effect against MRSA (and other bacteria) (much to my surprise, I might add).

So far all actual research papers I've seen have referenced grape seed extract rather than grapefruit seed extract. I have found information suggesting that it also has similar effects but no hard evidence (yet). Grape seed extract on the other hand? Does appear to have a significant antimicrobial effect when tested in a lab setting.

This isn't to say, of course, that no research has been done on grapefruit seed extract or that it doesn't work - merely that I couldn't easily find any peer reviewed research suggesting that it does.

My chickens have been doing just about the same thing... However they are also losing feathers.. im relatively new to chicken keeping and I know they molt so it might just be a coincident that its at the same time.. my chickens are perfectly normal in the way they act so im not sure what it could be... other then some kind of parasite or mites possibly? im getting ready to treat mine with vetrx and mite dust it has always seemed to work in the past..

I have one chick (5 wks) who sneezes. She may or may not have irritation to environmental things (dust, etc). She does not shake her head. She is not lethargic. She is perky & eats well. She does not have discharge from nostrils. Suggestions? Is she sick or sneezy? No one else effected. Been together for 5 weeks.
