The chicks do not have any unusual odor. I also do have them on Vi-tal. A supplement. I have been doing one day on, one day off, just to see if that is what is causing the pasty butt. Thanks for your help!!
I looked up CRD, what does the bubbly eye symptom look like? I do not think the chicks have drainage, but since they are shaking their heads so much maybe they are throwing it everywhere instead of it setting on their nose? They do look messy, like some of their feathers have been wet and haven't been fluffed back up. The Buff silkies who are showing symptoms are the runts of the group. I have one white one that looks good but is doing the shaking head thing. If they do have CRD what are the chances the rest will get it? What do I do?
I now have 6 chicks in the box. The new ones are just shaking their heads, no noise, they just look like they are trying to clear their nose, but they are doing it about every 15 seconds!! Is there anything I can give them to help?
Well after much reading I have decided to treat my chicks with Tetracycline, does anyone know how much to put in a gallon of water? The dose says 400-800 mg per gallon I figured about 1 tsp. Is this right? Almost all of my chicks are sneezing now so I know I must do something.
What hatchery did they come from? Please call them and ask if they have experienced any illness recently.
Tetracyclin won't hurt, I think you are about right with the measurement.
The bubbly eye gook is just that- looks like bubbles spewing out of the eyes. The nasel passages get crusty like dried boogers.
Keep them warm and dry, do the antibiotics and see how it goes.
Please do call the hatchery. I had trouble with silkies too.
Good luck
Christina
Thanks for the info on the dosage. I just hope I am not too late for some, a couple have gotten pretty bad off today. I will call the hatchery tomorrow and inquire. I really feel like it is CRD. I bet if I let it go on much longer they would have the bubbles in the eyes. Will my other chickens get it from this new group when I introduce them to the flock? What would you suggest?
I've got the same thing. I've lost 3 hens in three days.
They've been on antibiotic for 2 days and more are getting it.... I'm scared I'm going to loose all of my chickens.
We've separated them, given them chopped up boiled egg, put triple antibiotic on their bubble eyes. (one got better this way)... others aren't responding.
I have decided to put all my chicks on the antibiotic. I know some may think this is not the thing to do but about half are showing symptoms now and I do not want to wait for the rest to be bad off before starting. Good luck with your flock along with mine.
