Sneezing EE, please help

So I checked this morning. She is very active, no frost or gooey stuff around nose or beak or eyes. She is eating. I gave her medicine in water. Does not look huddled. Sneezing and coughing more frequently than yesterday, Still quarantined. Poop very normal

Have you smelled her face?

I smelled her right now and cant sense the 'ill smell' that usually comes from sick birds. It was there yesterday. She is very active, She is preening herself and don't see any goo on nose, eyes or mouth. She is desperate to come out of the cage and join others. Her noise is that of a sick bird and her sneezing / coughing continues. She is drinking the medicine and eating like a healthy bird. Let us see tomorrow

If you're giving her antibiotics and it seems to be working, then do keep her isolated from the other birds to ensure no one else gets sick.

Be aware, depending on the disease, she may always be a carrier of whatever it is.

Thanks pathfinders. I think all the 5 birds that I got from this one farmer carry ssame disease. TWo are dead and the rest are borderline. I will keep her separate for few more days. Not sure when the sneezing will stop. I am also not sure how to describe the smell to you.

It is highly possible/likely that your other birds are going to come down with whatever this is in time, they have already been exposed to this bird. Quarantine at this point is almost pointless but I won't say don't do it.

Watch and listen to her very carefully. When birds have any kind of respiratory disease, doesn't matter if it's bacterial or viral, their odd's of developing pneumonia/secondary bacterial infections is very, very high. That's why many people treat respiratory disease outbreaks immediately with antibiotic's. You can reduce or remove the risk of pneumonia and infections and birds recover faster and with far fewer complications. They can usually recover from these diseases, it's the complications that most often kill them. Though, as mentioned, they will remain carriers.

If you bird starts coughing more or you hear any wheezing or rattling when she breaths you may want to switch to Tylan 50, either injected or orally, rather then dosing in the water. Dosing birds via water is hit and miss at best. You are delivering low doses of medication randomly and sick birds often drink less then normal. Injecting or oral dosing is a much more sure way of getting the proper daily dose into them.

So, how many other chickens do you have besides the five you got from the farmer?

By all means, keep this one quarantined from your other birds, and if you have chickens other than the ones you got from the farmer, it might be best to take all the rest out from your main flock and isolate them too.

I am sorry this is happening to you. Very distressing. I hope it works out.

I have 9 surviving at the moment. 5 of them came from different farms and are healthy, and 4 from this place where he was probably trying to pass on sick chicken, cause I didn't know anything then. First he gave me a rooster and claimed it to be pullet, and I returned after it started crowing (within a week of purchase). Then he passed a very sick bird to me which died the next day. When I complained, his reaction, "It did not feel right selling it to you, but it seemed ok then".

I am watching the rest of 8 and they seem all fine at the moment. The sick bird, we call marmalade, is EE with Wyandotte mix, and she seems getting better. Today each sneeze came at 10 second interval or more so 5 times less sneezing. Let us see what happens tomorrow

Wow. I think I would avoid buying anything from that guy in the future!

Thanks pathfinders. What he tried to say was may be "I knew the bird was sick and was going to die soon but since you liked it so much, I hid the information from you and sold it anyways". This guy is a vet and wins lots of prizes in showing contests and this shocked me even more. Anyways, marmalade is getting better. When do I end the quarantine. She is not happy and trying to get out of the cage. Her sneezing has slowed down but continues. Rest is all clear. She is eating well. Other birds are fine. Today they had a hawk attack so hiding udner the bushes for the time being.

I really would wait until at least five days have passed after she has stopped sneezing. I understand she dislikes being in the cage, but you don't want to put the rest of your chickens at risk.
