I was searching for what my birds might have and I came across this site. I have 3, 3 month old, Standard Cochin Cockerels that are gurgling and sneezing. They aren't experiencing any other symptoms. This started on the May 7th and I started giving them Duramycin-10 on May 10th. I'm not sure what is wrong with them, please help! They are separated from the rest of the flock. Should I switch to Tylan 50, or can I give both Duramycin 10 and Tylan 50 at the same time? Thanks!

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
LF Cochin Cockerels, 3 months old, 3 of them. They feel the same weight as everyone else that isn't gurgling or sneezing.

2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Sneezing occasionally, gurgling sound when breathing. eating and drinking normal, no abnormal feather loss, acting normal, no weight loss, they seem fine except the sneezing and gurgling.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
Since May 7th

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
Just the 3.

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
None

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
It has been rather hot for the washington region lately, high 80's-low 90's. high pollen as well. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
Eating and drinking normally.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Normal

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
they are separated and have been given Duramycin-10 in their water since the 10th

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
I would like to treat completely

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
No picture

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
Housing is a 12ftx12ft shed with an 18ftx18ft run. The housing is dry and well ventilated. The bedding is Pine shavings. The housing is cleaned once a week. the 3 cockerels are currently in their own pens that are 2ftx2ft to keep them separated.

It's possible that pollen could be the problem, but your other birds would be affected and that's not happening. I'm glad you're practicing biosecurity, good job.
You started treating them with the duramycin on the 10th. FYI: Dosage for duramycin 10 is 1 tablespoon per gallon of water for the 800mg dose. I believe the treatment is 7--14 days. A fresh batch must be made daily and nothing else added to the mixture.
You've only been treating them for 2 days (today is the 12th.) You have to give the meds time to do its job, it's not going to happen overnight.
Normally with respiratory diseases, there are usually other symptoms in addition to the ones you described. You could be dealing with a fungal issue rather than a bacterial or viral problem, only time will tell if the duramycin isnt working in about 10 days or so without at least some improvement.
There is one thing you can do in addition to treating them with the duramycin and treat for a possible fungal problem at the same time. Purchase Oxine (AH.) Buy a cheap plastic spray bottle mister at any garden center. Mix 1/8 teaspoon oxine (without activator) with one gallon of water, then fill your bottle with the mixture. Adjust to the fineist mist possible and spray over the heads of your roosters 3 times a day for 10 days straight. Hope this helps.

In a word I would say that you have a case of Mycoplasma gallisepticum. OK that is two words. No joke though, this is a serous illness and it is often a big part of the ailment known as "Chronic Respiratory Disease." As with so many poultry diseases if your fowl has one ailment it compromises their immune system and makes them easy prey for other diseases. Good luck.

I just bought Tylan 50 injectable. Should I give them that instead of Duramycin?

Hey, brand new to the whole chicken keeping life, but we have just got 4 different hybrids last weekend...
Anyway, with it being United Kingdom, one evening it was pouring with rain and colder than normal, and since that one of my flock, the White Ranger, has had the exact symptoms as the OP. Any advice would be gratefully received, she seems absolutely fine otherwise, and is the friendliest of the lot (always coming up and saying hi when i go out).
Edit: I would like to clarify, they hens we got are Point Of Lay, and the affected White Ranger is only making a gurgle sound and sneezing occasionally, not a constant thing.
