I have a hen that has been sneezing from time to time, ive only had her for about a month. when i first noticed it i took her awya from the flock and kept an eye on her for about a week and i never seen any other symotoms. she eats and drinks normal she runs around acting very healthy but still she sneezes. what could this be? is this normal for some chickens?

Chickens do sneeze occasionally. Is she only sneezing, or wheezing from her lungs too? Occasional sneezing (not constantly) can be normal, but wheezing is another story.

I have a hen that seems to go on a sneezing bout from time-to-time. I watch my flock carefully - it's only her. Not sure why.

When it happens, I put vitamins in the water, which seems to do the trick. If that doesn't work, try isolating her and give her some antibiotics, but definitely try the vitamins first. Another soothing thing for her is VetRx (found at Tractor Supply or a pet store). It's kind of like a Vicks VapoRub for chickens. It's a liquid and you can put it on their beaks, under their wings so their lungs open a bit.

I've learned it's common for chickens to have respitory illness sometimes, and wheezing can be a sign. It can be caused by bedding dust, not enough ventilation, mold, contact with other sick birds, etc.

What kind of bedding are you using? Do they have enough ventilation?

I'm sure the experts on here can give you more advice - I'm fairly new (9 mos newbie).

Hope this helps!

i dont hear any weezing, its mostly at night. i use pine shavings in their house, and as far as i know its well ventelated

I'm afraid I can't help you much but I also live in NC and bought 2 hens at a flea mkt. from someone I trusted and they may have given the rest of my chickens something because they're all sneezing now.

The only odd thing is i've had them for almost 7 weeks and this just started last week.
So, I don't know what it is.

Where did you get your hen etc.?

i got mine from a friend who raises chickens and sells different breeds. he told me they have all been tested for everything so i dont know whats up. does yours act healthy other than the sneezing?

Yes they are eating well, jumping the fence etc.
The rooster has a weak hoarse crow which i'm not complaining about but it makes you wonder.

I live near Wallace which is where I bought my chickens.
I bought them from someone I have bought chickens from before.

However last week when I was there (at the flea mkt.) I overheard the wife telling someone that they buy a lot of their chickens at stock sales.

That said, I was planning on getting 2 or 3 peeps this spring but not now.
I may let one of my hens hatch out an egg or 2 just to see if it's something transmissible through the egg.

I will NOT be adding any outside birds ever again unless it is to start from scratch after bleaching everything.
Years from now. And even then, it would be a batch of biddies from the feed store.

Hopefully I don't lose all or any of my birds in learning this lesson.

Oh, I started giving them grits with fresh garlic grated in it and a vitamin/mineral/electrolyte mixture in their water called Vi-Tal.

The sneezing dropped very quickly after that.

P.S. I've been doing this everyday since last Fri.
