Sneezing/ watery discharge

One of my 6 week old yokohamas is sneezing and producing a small amount of clear watery discharge from his nostrils. He still has a great appetite and is not lethargic, is this something I should worry about? Should i go ahead and quarantine him just to be safe?

yokohamamama- Yes you should quarantine the bird. And yes it is something to worry about. Have you brought in any new birds lately? Any other birds sick in your flock? Any unexpected deaths?

No, he is the only one and they were all bought and raised from the same place at the same time, so no new chickens :/ should i give him any antibiotics while I am quarantining him?

I would not give antibiotics, no matter what. They may mask symptoms you need to surface to make a determination.

Actually, even the discharge, if it's clear, may be no more than water the bird just drank being sneezed out. They can have dust and dirt in the nares (nostrils) or feed crammed up in there, could be sneezing from something environmental like ammonia or dust or even chemicals in new plywood or caulk. It's not unusual for some clear liquid to be sneezed out under those circumstances.

The protocol is to separate symptomatic birds and observe that bird and the flock it came from for any other symptoms. Then you'll know better how to proceed.

Try give her some Florfenicol. It may be helpful.

You're not in the United States, I take it. What is Florfenicol? Never heard of it.

Best not to medicate at all just for sneezing. Folks are way too quick to give medications to their chickens.



ETA: Looked it up. I have never seen it on a shelf here so it's probably a prescription drug. I would definitely skip that.

Well, I do not plan on giving him ANY antibiotics unless absolutely necessary, i believe in homeopathic remedies for me AND my family, I did however use some vet RX hoping he might at least feel better ( hope that was OK) and hes really perky, kind of sad to be trapped in a box by himself though, I made my Tupperware brooder into a chicken hospital lol, he seems lonely and its breaking my heart I am going to give him a couple more days to see if he gets better or worse, or even stays the same before putting him back with every one else. This has been good bonding time though!

Vet Rx is not a medication, just an aid like Vicks VapoRub.

Sometimes, it seems that even putting some unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with "the mother" in the water helps clear out any dust or whatever is causing the irritation, plus it has beneficial vitamins. I even use that in a tea with honey when I have a bad cold (though chickens don't get head colds like humans do).
