We had an ice storm last night, and the uncovered part of the outside run is like an ice rink. When I let them out this morning, a couple of them went onto it, slipped and slid a bit and got off quick!. I'm hoping they'll all avoid it today and stay under the covered area. It's going to get to 41 degrees today, so a good amount will melt, hopefully, but it's going to be a big ol' mess in there. Wood chips are hard to get this time of year - I wish I'd been more prepared.

Got any sand?
That's what I use for ice traction.
I put it in a shaker bottle for easy application.

we use ashes from wood stove--messy but effective

That's what we always did when I was a kid and a teen in western PA.

In the morning before we refilled the stove Dad would shovel out a mix of ashes, cinders, and live coals and spread it on the icy patches outside the door.
