Snowed in chickens

I think what the chickens miss most in this situation, is not getting their daily ration of weeds that I usually throw to them daily. I used to get a few that I pull from the veggie garden, but I'm not about to start digging for them, through the snow. I have tried to supplement a bit by giving them some cabbage, and other salad scraps from the kitchen, but I like to eat greens too, and I'm not going to feed them all mine..

When all that snow melts, the main run might be a tad muddy for a few days. I bet they prefer mud over snow though.

I get the biggest cheapest bag of frozen mixed vegetables at Walmart and thaw out to feed my chickens.... They love em

Or a bag of peas and corn works too......Sure beats trying to find grass in the snow drifts

I love how the picture where the chickens are outside they all have their necks craned way out like "wha???"

And that scarecrow rocks! Where did you get the mask for the face?

The mask, my Wife picked up at a thrift store. We used an old projector screen pedestal, also from the thrift store, for the under-support system. The clothing was stuffed with straw. Every year we make a new one, as the cloths and straw take a beating over winter. I think we'll keep the mask, and the pill hat for for the 2009 version.

This was the hens first encounter with snow, and I'm sure they were really wondering what happened to their run...

WOW, we have never gotten any thing like that!! I want snow so bad, I guess I need to watch what I with for!!!!

Great pictures - love the scarecrow!!!!!

Great pics. Reminds me of my Colorado days. Now in Hawaii. All my Canadian friends told me Vancouver was the banana belt! Where are the bananas?

Vancouver generally "is" the warmer part of Canada during winters, Vancouver Island even more so. As the island is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, it usually has even warmer temps. then the mainland, and Vancouver city.

This is very rare, to get such a heavy snowfall, although a little snow each winter, perhaps amounting to 2-3" isn't unusual. Usually it's gone the next day. According to the local news, this is the 7th heaviest snowfall on record, in the last 100 years, for this particular area. Perhaps it's "global warming"..
