My hair isn't actually black, its just a very dark brown.

I'm pretty sure I can dye it a lighter color, isn't that what the hair dyes are for?

Dying dark hair a lighter color can work, but it's very damaging for your hair, because lighter shades are easiest to attain by bleaching first. Not saying that it's impossible to accomplish without bleaching, it's just much harder without it.

My Mother has deep, dark cocoa hair (Like yours, it's almost black) by nature, but she decided to try being a red-head for a while, just to see how she'd look. Though she did get to the color she had in mind, which was a 'Henna red', it made her hair quite brittle over time, and it took lots of conditioning to repair the damage it did.

...Then she promptly dyed it chocolate brown again.
