Funny, funny! That's like my girls. I use sand in the run and coop. I was putting new dry sand out in the run, which is a different color than the existing wet sand that was already there. Apparently dry, lighter colored sand is acid as well, lol! They would not walk on it, as if there feet would melt if they touched it. They would go out of their way to go around it. They finally decided it was ok when some food was thrown onto it. We all the know the way to a chicken's heart is through its stomach, right? (or was that men?)
Mine didn't even come down off their roosts this am when the pop door was opened for them. They saw the snow & said no way, we don't like that awful white stuff!! They do treat it like it is acid killer snow.....such silly girls!!! They did eventually venture out, but they stayed where there was no snow, so basically they were under the coop.
We are expecting snow this weekend and a few of my girls will be experiencing it for the first time.
It should be worth a giggle to see their reactions.
One of my young pullets went to run through their favorite puddle this morning but it was frozen and her legs went up in the air and she landed on her fluffy butt.
I probably shouldn't have laughed out loud. I'm pretty sure she gave me the stink-eye.
Well , we are having our 2nd BIG BLIZZARD right now, and its not supposed to stop until Friday at 7pm.
Whats so funny, is MY DOPY girls in one flock, LOVE the snow.
I cant get them to come back in and neither can their Polish Roo. He doesnt care for the snow much but he seems to give up .
My ducks seem to do OK in it, but it seems their feet get very cold and they then just plop down and cover them.
They will come in easier than the rest.
Today, I had to shovel through 14 inches of snow that was blowing, just to go collect eggs from those silly ladies, but it was worth it, just to see those fluffy BIG butts...the duck's as well as the chickens.
Thank you so much for a morning laugh! That was too funny.
My young hens don't like the snow, but the older ones are fine with it. For all of them, it's all relative. If there is something worth trudging through the 1" dusting of snow, like say, cooked rice or a cantalope, then snow is fine.
The prints in the snow crack me up.
Some try to fly over the snow, but decide the crash landing is worse than just walking in it.
