I found these helpfull show prep advise on SCNA forum, hopefully these will help those of you who can't make it to our pre-show meeting. Yes, we will be covering all the subjects at our meeting on the 21st of May. Since time is not on our side, I would highly recommend all of you to start working with your birds now. 25% of your score is base on how your birds perform.

One of the top things to NOT do when preparing for a show...

1) DO NOT CLIP or ALTER any feathers, such as cutting wing or tail feathers. If there is feather damage, this should be dealt with 8-10 weeks prior to a show by pulling those feathers and allowing time for regrowth. Evidence of altering is considered faking and cause for disqualification of that bird from the show.

Some of the other things that you should not overlook, so simple yet so often ignored:

1) Nails, TRIM THOSE TOENAILS.
2) Beaks, TRIM THOSE BEAKS.
3) Double check for mites the day before the show, no one wants to handle a mite infested bird.
4) Double check the health of your bird. If you've had an outbreak within the last 30 days, you may be doing everyone a huge favor by not entering those birds who may still be carriers. Also, a bird recovering from an illness is more susceptible to stress from a show and could relapse as showing is HIGHLY stressful on a bird.

Starting months before the show, have everyone you can find handle your birds in different situations. Many birds are great with their daily handler, but in the hands of someone they do not know they become extremely frightened and stressed. The more you can socialize your Serama before a show the better the bird will perform. Practice standing your bird on different surfaces-tacky, rough, slippery, solid, wobbly, etc.. Birds that are kept on wire should be removed at least two weeks prior to their show date and put onto a solid surface in deep shavings. Wire kept birds will almost always have a less than desirable performance (or refuse to perform) when put on a solid surface if they have not had time to acclimate. Teach your bird to allow you to drive it around a surface by steering it from the tail section, making it walk. Many birds when asked to do this will squat down and then lunge if asked to move. Practicing this will teach them to move while maintaining a pose and composure when asked without squatting, lunging or taking flight.

A winning bird is calm and confident. Birds that are handled a lot show better.
The importance of grooming.
This is pretty much a beauty Padget
A winning bird shines. Bathing is a good idea should a bird ever get dirty, and not just before a show.
Pre-treat with either Spray and Wash or Cowboy Magic,
There are many methods for bathing start with the feet (soft brush, soap, and a hose with a spray in a big sink).
Use a gentle shampoo, Ivory snow or Dawn. Bluing goes in the rinse water for white birds. NOT ON THE BIRD!
Where mites have been present, you can use Adams flea and tick shampoo or equivalent which do a great job removing the stains – not too much, as these soaps are
strong, and excessive use of soap removes natural oils from feathers.
wrap in a towel, with the head free, and wash then wash the crest.
Apply drops of shampoo to the pre-treated crest, moisten a little, gently work the stuff sudsy with fingers, then hold the bird upside down, dip and work the shampoo in some more.
Rinse crest again by dunking the wrapped bird’s crest in the tub of clean water.
I do blow-dry my birds some just finish them out in a very warm small room.
Clip and check toenails, beaks, and scrutinize feet for possible stubs.
I use a small dremel tool but you can use a file to smooth the edges of the nails.
Don’t forget to clean the nostrils.

SCNA we are going to have quite a few people who are new to the breed, please lets take them in with open arms and educate them, for the Hard core dedicated breeders i am sure we are going to have many with their birds that are pets that they bring to this show, they will be just as proud of theirs as we are of ours!!, these birds will be judged accordingly but please remember that these are someones loved pets, WIN OR loose, We have some Great serama people that can offer mounds of advise and input to any level of serama keeper. Lets keep this positive and fun for all, we as a group will benifit from this in the long run!!
