So confused. How would you breed chocolate cuckoo orpingtons?

I would like to get a chocolate cuckoo chick and no one in Canada seems to be breeding them. Do they not breed true? So i have been reading genetics and just getting to confused.

So once and for all coming to the experts! How do I make chocolate cuckoos and how do I get them to breed true?

i have Sapphires also and to get them to breed true I would breed back to a cream legbar rooster, correct?

I know, i am out of my depth but I really want to learn this

They breed true. Breed chocolate cuckoo to chocolate cuckoo.

Or, if starting from scratch, breed chocolate male to cuckoo female and you'll get chocolate females and split chocolate cuckoo males. Then breed the chocolate females to the split males and approximately 50% of the offspring will be chocolate cuckoo.

Can't help you on the other part but if you are talking about Sapphires that are created by breeding White Leghorn hens to a Cream Legbar rooster, they are an F1 hybrid and will never breed true.

Sapphires are Sapphire gems, a sexlink, right? Those are hybrids, and don't breed true. If you want the offspring to lay green eggs, sure, breed them back to a cream legbar, but I wouldn't bother.

Sapphires were around long before they came up with Sapphire Gems and no they are not the same and they are definitely not sex links. Sapphires are truly only Sapphires only for that first generation just like CornishX are only CornishX for that first generation. They are a true hybrid.

Breeding them back to a legbar should breed true on blue eggs.

Breeding them back to a Legbar will ensure blue eggs but they will no longer be Sapphires. The point of Sapphires is that they lay large to extra large light blue eggs and lay nearly as frequently as their White Leghorn mothers. The more of the Legbar genes you bring in the more they revert to the smaller eggs and less frequent laying. Breeding the F1 hybrid Sapphires back to a Legbar rooster can even produce some Cream Legbars since each Sapphire owes half its genes to a Cream Legbar rooster.
