So...did any of you catch flack for having chickens?

I have a friend who lives on a dairy farm. When I suggested she get a few chickens her response was, "David really wants some, but I heard they stink and are a lot of work, so I said no." Helloooooooo you live on a DAIRY farm and you're worried about CHICKENS stinking and WORK?! You have 100 cows in your backyard that have to be milked twice a day, chickens would be nothing compared to that! Sometimes stereotypes are hard to break, even for those who should know better...

I got chickens 20 years ago, when I lived in the city of Austin, TX. Had no clue what I was doing, (no internet) but I muddled through somehow. Next thing I know, my S. Austin neighbors ALL had chickens in their backyards and the unwritten rule was no roosters.

We had BBQs every Sunday, always an open thing - just show up and eat, bring something if you want to. Hmmm... bunch of people started showing up with fresh corn - because the chickens LOVED it!

I will NEVER forget the Sunday BBQ when a couple of my biker pals were hanging out. Panama is a huge tough guy, (also the best ER nurse ever) and he was sitting in a lawn chair, having a bit of all things barbequed. The look on his face, when a white Leghorn hopped into his plate, standing in a puddle of BBQ sauce...........

I don't really get too much flack, but I'm amazed at how folks think it's funny to have chickens. They invariably ask, "How many chickens you got?" Then when I answer, "about 15", they just die laughing. They should see some of my friends who have 200-300 birds in their backyard!

Yes I got it. My friends who are out of state thinks that I should be raising cattle since I'm in Texas. *eye roll* some of my Tx friends thinks I'm crazy cause my little Widget is predominately a house chicken. But I'm too old to care what they think and young enough to do it.

Yes, many people did and do act as if I'm a nutzo, keeping chickens in the year 2011.

A lot of my friends think I am crazy, but they are also supportive. We live in an area (and belong to a church) where the people are very big into being self-sufficient. I do get a lot of questions about how it is going having chickens in town. I got into it thinking it would be a lot more work than it has ended up being. I love them and we are having a lot of fun.

We got ours a little over a month ago and everyone we tell sounds appalled! "Chickens?! Why would you want chickens!?" Then there are all sorts of questions about aren't they smelly and disease carriers? Eggs are cheap, why don't you just go to the store and buy eggs directly? Don't your cats make better pets, why do you need more pets? And my favorite, "But you don't live on a farm!"

Not really ... I guess chickens weren't a far stretch after I got bees. I love my little urban farm and I get a lot of POSITIVE feedback from everyone. I would agree though, there are a LOT of misconceptions when it comes to chickens (and honeybees for that matter!). Chicken-on, my friends, chicken-on.
