So disappointed in hatching eggs

With shipped eggs you have to go into it thinking that some will not make it, but your hope is greater than eggs that don't make it. If the air cells are loose when the eggs arrive, after they are in incubator set them up right, (fat end up) and don't turn for 3 days. I had eggs shipped the farthest from me- and I had to wait 1 week before turning, because of the loose air cell. Also try not to candle too much.

I actually did do this. They arrived fat end up and put them in and did not turn for a bit over 2 days. Day 6 candle to see if any started and just disappointed.

Seller told may day 6 is too early. She hatched "thousands of eggs". Days 6 isn't early to me? Thoughts?

What do you mean Day 6 is too early? Too early for what?

I've hatched two different shipments of eggs from the same supplier in two different years. Both were packaged the same. One hatch was a 20% success, the other a 100% success. The oldest of the shipped eggs were about 5 or 6 days old when they were shipped and arrived a couple of days later. They were shipped by truck not airplane.

Before he retired my brother was a rural mail carrier with the post office. He said most Post Office people handled fragile packages with care but occasionally one specific employee would toss them around. Don't assume all Post Office employees are lowlifes with no moral upbringing. It is like in any other profession, you get all kinds. Most are decent people.

Some shippers are not going to handle them wisely before shipping or may not package them well. Many will. Some shipping will be handled well, some will not be. I do not know how to control either the shippers or the shipping. To me it is blind luck.

I don't have any solution to the problem if you want specific eggs from a distant source.

Candling day 6

Candling day 6
Thank you for answering. I think it depends on why you are candling. With good candling equipment, some experience, and eggs that are relatively easy to see inside you can see development by Day 3. With some eggs it can be hard that early.

I generally candle Day 7 so development is clear. I don't make any decisions on Day 7, that's just to satisfy my curiosity. On Day 18 I candle and decide which are going into lockdown.

By Day 6 if you can clearly see inside the egg (dark shells can be a challenge) you should be able to see veins and more.

I will say that I had a few eggs once that I didn't think were developing on Day 5 or 6 and decided to crack them to see if the yoke was scrambled during shipping. All of them were as I expected except for one and there was a tiny chick in there that was developing just like it was supposed to. I felt awful!!! I feel like Im really good at candling eggs but I was way off on that one. Give it another week. Then you will know for sure before tossing.

Midwestmomma,

The first time I ordered eggs they came via UPS, all of them failed to develop at all. Scrambled in transit it seems. Rather a disappointment for the first time guy.. The seller graciously offered to replace the eggs after I told her. The second set were sent by FedEX and treated the same way resulting in a 70% hatch rate. Perhaps the seller will help you out, tell them about the great review you'll do.

I have. She said wait until day 10 reach back out... also seems defensive.
