So do I need a pooper scooper now?

I don't use the space where my chicken range for anything else so it's not a problem. I have special shoes to wear to the coop and all that. I don't wear my church clothes to take care of the chickens.

You'll figure it out. I know you can do it.

We have two dogs so the additional pooper scooper duty was not much of an adjustment. DW has a phobia about cleaning up after the dogs several times per day. The four ladies free range in the same yard so it works out.

Yes! me! me! me! I have a pooper scooper! (which used to be a kitchen tool)Its err, breaking apart cuz of the poison of the poop. lol, but yeah the top part actually broke off. I still use it anyway. Its extra gross when you scoop the poo after it rains cuz its so soggy and... *faints*

I have 6 hens. They poo like hell

Yeah, that's kind of one of those facts of living with chickens that you get used to after a while. If you want to let the girls free range in the yard instead of keeping them penned 24/7, you're going to have to stop going barefoot in said yard. I have a pair of shoes on the back porch that [almost] never come into the house just for running around in the yard and going to the chicken coop. I don't let my child go outside in the backyard barefoot and I make sure any visitors also know that it's not a good idea.

I do pick up the poop too. But I have two large dogs, so I've had to regularly do poop patrol for years before we got the chickens. I find it easiest to pick up poo using a latex glove, so while I'm out there picking up the dog poop I also get the chicken poop. Dog poop goes into a plastic bag and tossed in the garbage, chicken poop goes into a bucket and dumped in the compost bin. I still wouldn't dare go out there barefoot, but at least it keeps the flies down and minimizes the numbers of chicken land mines for the toddler to walk/fall in.

I can't walk around barefoot, too many sand burs(sticker thorns/weeds). They often break off in your feet when removing.

Sounds like you have a nice garden so you may want to give up free ranging and either build them a sufficient size yard but you will have to clean that out occasionally or build them a portable run that you can move from area to area and not be bothered with cleaning up poop. Unfortunately you will have poop and lots of it. That's the way of the chicken. I myself would never walk any where barefoot that chickens have been. Crocks work great and as others have said they wash up nicely.
